Herb up to 60cm tall, native to Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Russian Far East; plant covered with hairs; leaves pinnate, 6-15 cm long, nearly sessile; leaf­lets in 8-12 pairs, narrowly ovate to narrowly elliptic; racemes axillary, loosely many flowered, 4-5cm, at fruiting time strongly elongated to 9-14 cm; petals yellow, rarely lilac; pod ovate-oblong.

Indications for A.mongholicus roots are perspiration caused by weakness or from no apparent cause, chronic diarrhoea and rectocele.

The two sources of Radix Astragali, A.membranaceus and A.mongholicus, contain a higher amount of astragaloside I and IV than their adulterants, Astragalus propinquus, Astragalus lepsensis, Astragalus aksuensis, Astragalus hoantchy, Astragalus hoantchy subsp. dshimensis, Astragalus lehmannianus, Astragalus sieversianus, and Astragalus austrosibiricus.

The dried roots, Chinese drug name PhPRC 2010 and PhEur: Astragali mongholici radix, huangqi, 黃芪, are used to treat fatigue, general weakness, loss of appetite, insomnia, palpitations, anxiety, anemia, easy to catch cold, aversion against wind, spontaneous sweating, and prolapse of rectum or uterus. The drug contains triterpenoid saponins (PhEur min. 0.040%; astragaloside IV derivatives), flavonoids, coumarin, polysaccharides, amino acids, folic acid, and beta-sitosterol.
