Perennial plant, to 120ck tall, native to tropical Asia and Australasia; stem upright with alternate, blade-shaped leaves 15-20cm long; flower heads on separate and shorter stalks, conical or club-shaped.
„As the flower heads mature, they gradually fill with an aromatic, slimy liquid and turn a brighter red color… The clear fragrant juice present in the mature flower heads that resemble red pine cones is used for softening and bringing shininess to the hair.“

Main components of the flower oil of Zingiber zerumbet Smith from Reunion Island obtained by steam distillation were (E)-nerolidol (34.9%), linalool (17.1%), and β-caryophyllene (10.2%).
