Wisteria brachybotrys Siebold & Zucc. syn. Wisteria venusta Rehder & E.H.Wilson - Fabaceae - silky wisteria

Deciduous woody climber (twining anticlockwise), native to Japan and eastern China, cultivated as ornamental elsewhere; leaves odd pinnate, up to 35cm long, leaflets downy, up to 11; flowers in hanging sprays 10-15cm long, white or purple white with a central yellow stain, very fragrant; seedpods velvety, up to 20cm long.

The major components of essential oil (steam distillation; ~0.02% yield w/w) from flowers of W.brachybotrys were benzyl cyanide (31.7%), palmitic acid (8.7%), (Z)-γ-bisabolene (8.4%), nonanal (7.5%), geraniol (3.0%), benzylalcohol (2.9%), linalool (2.9%), (E,E)-farnesole (2.6%), indole (2.4%), benzylhydrazine? (2.1%), 2-phenylethanol (2.1%), linolenic acid (2.1%), linoleic acid (1.4%), and methyl anthranilate (1.4%). Minor components were e.g. cis-3-hexenol (0.9%), methional (0.2%), 2,3-dimethylpyrazine (0.2%), benzaldehyde (0.4%), octanal, phenylacetaldehyde (0.5%), α-terpineol, decanal, 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, neral, geranial, citronellyl formate, 4-vinylguaiacol, undecanal, β-ionone, zingiberene, and nerolidol.
