Strobilanthes tonkinensis Lindau, syn. Semnostachya menglaensis H.P.Tsui, Strobilanthes tonkinensis var. tonkinensis - Acanthaceae - 糯米香 nuo mi xiang (chin.)

Herb, 50-100 cm tall, native to moist forests of Guangxi, Yunnan (200-1500 m) and parts of Thailand and Vietnam; leaves broadly oblong-elliptic, to 18.5 × 6 cm,; inflorescences terminal, simple spikes, 3-11 cm, flowers calyx 5-lobed to base; lobes linear, 8-9 × ca. 1 mm, corolla pink to pure white, ca. 3.2 cm, tube basally cylindric and ca. 2 mm wide for ca. 1 cm then gradually widened to ca. 1 cm at mouth, seeds ovate in outline, ca. 2 × 2 mm, pubescent.
„Strobilanthes tonkinensis is a medicinal and aromatic plant… The name „Semnostachya menglaensis“ (H. P. Tsui, FRPS 70: 349. 2002) belongs here but was not validly published because the herbarium where the type specimen is conserved was not specified (Vienna Code, Art. 37.7).“ http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=250096747

„Some pu'er are flavour-infused. Sticky rice pu'er (nuomixiang, 糯米香) is infused with leaves of Semnostachya menglaensis, native to Mengla, which gives it a young rice flavour.“ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pu%27er_tea

„Semnostachya menglaensis Tsui (Acanthaceae) is a rare plant indigenous to Mengla in the tropical rainforest of the Xishuangbanna prefecture in the south of Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. When the leaves are crushed, a characteristic smell of basmati rice or pandan leaves develops. Their hexane extract, prepared from a specimen growing in a greenhouse of the botanical garden of the Kunming Institute of Botany, contains 1-(3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-pyridyl)-1-propanone (41.2%) and 1-(1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-pyridyl)-1-propanone (37.5%) which constitute the main part of the volatile compounds. Minor components are 1-(3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-pyridyl)-1-ethanone (4.9%), 1-(1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-pyridyl)-1-ethanone (4.8%), 1-(2-piperidyl)-1-propanone (5.2%), 1-octen-3-ol (3.2%), 1-octen-3-one (1.9%), and 3-octanol and 1-(2-pyridyl)-1-propanone in trace amounts.“

Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) of Semnostachya menglaensis Tsui (S. menglaensis) leaves showed 29 odor-active compounds. „14 compounds were detected as important odorants by quantitative analysis and odor activity values (OAVs). An aroma recombination model prepared by mixing 12 odor-active compounds with OAVs ≥ 1 in an “aroma-free” S. menglaensis matrix showed good similarity to the aroma of original S. menglaensis. Omission tests showed that in the overall aroma of S. menglaensis, 2-propionyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine, 2-propionyl-1-pyrroline, 1-octen-3-ol, and linalool were the key odorants, and 2-acetyl-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine, 2-propionylpyridine, and α-ionone were also important.“
