„The flowers of S.californica possess a sweet, apple-like aroma, as a result, the aim of this study was to characterize the constituents responsible for its pleasant aroma… The flower scent was unusually rich in β-caryophyllene (56.6%)… With their low odor thresholds and fruity, apple-like odors, methyl 2-methylbutyrate (4.9%; odor threshold = 0.1 ppb) and ethyl 2-methylbutyrate (0.7%; odor threshold = 0.007 ppb) are likely important contributors to the characteristic odor of these flowers… Methyl butyrate (2.7%), methyl tiglate (0.9%), methyl isobutyrate (0.4%), ethyl butyrate (0.2%) and ethyl tiglate (0.2%) were other major esters though their odor thresholds are notably higher, 72 ppb, 130 ppb, 7 ppb, 1 ppb and 63 ppb, respectively. “
