Rosa gallica L. - syn.Rosa gallica var. officinalis Thory - Rosaceae - apothecary rose, Essig-Rose, Apotheker-Rose

Deciduous shrub, ; stems with prickles; leaves are pinnate, leaflets 3-7, bluish-green; flowers clustered 1-4 together, single with five petals, fragrant, deep pink; hips globose to ovoid, orange to brownish.

The pentane/dichloromethane extract of Rosa gallica petals showed phenylethanol as the main component (up to 89.9%), followed by hydrocarbons (up to 28.5%). Other components were benzyl alcohol, nerol, geraniol, geranyl acetate and benzyl benzoat. 4-Vinylphenol was detected in two samples of Rosa gallica.
