The sterodial saponin, pennogenin-3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside showed strong cardiotoxic effects in an in vitro cellular model system.

cardiotoxic/cytotoxic pennogenyl saponins (R = sugar part)

Pennogenyl saponins pennogenin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside and pennogenin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)]-β-D-glucopyranoside exhibited cytotoxic activity against HL-60, HeLa and MCF-7 tumour cells.
