Liliaceae - syn.Convallaria japonica L.f., Slateria japonica Desv.; snake's beard, mondo grass, Schlangenbart
Stoloniferous plant native to China, Japan, India, and Vietnam; leaves basal, sessile, grasslike, generally 10–50 cm long, margin serrulate; flowers white to pale lilac; fruit a blue berry (5 mm diameter).
„It is also grown as an ornamental plant, providing an excellent groundcover. Several cultivars have been selected, including 'Albus' (white flowers), 'Compactus' and 'Kyoto Dwarf' (dwarf forms, not over 4–5 cm tall), and 'Silver Mist' (variegated, with white-striped leaves).“

„In traditional Chinese medicine Ophiopogon japonicus tuber, known as mai men dong (Chinese: 麥門冬), is the cardinal herb for yin deficiency.“ http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=200027794
„To provide some pharmacological evidence for its clinical use in inflammatory diseases, anti-inflammatory effect of the aqueous extract from Radix Ophiopogon japonicus (ROJ-ext), a traditional Chinese herb, was examined in mouse and rat models. ROJ-ext significantly inhibited xylene-induced ear swelling and carrageenan-induced paw edema in mice when given orally at doses of 25 and 50 mg/kg… results demonstrate that ROJ-ext presents remarkable anti-inflammatory activity and ruscogenin and ophiopogonin D are two of its active components, which supported its traditional use in the treatment of various diseases associated with inflammation.“ [Anti-inflammatory activities of aqueous extract from Radix Ophiopogon japonicus and its two constituents. „On the other hand, ophiopogonin D (0.5—2.0 mg/kg, p.o.) and ruscogenin (0.25—1.00 mg/kg, p.o.) produced dose-related inhibition of venous thrombosis induced by tight ligation of the inferior vena cava for 6 h in mice by once oral administration. The findings of this study indicate that an aqueous extract of Radix Ophiopogon japonicus (ROJ-ext) exerted significant antithrombotic activity and ruscogenin and ophiopogonin D are two of its active components, which supported its therapeutic use for thrombotic diseases.“ [Antithrombotic activities of aqueous extract from Radix Ophiopogon japonicus and its two constituents.
