Main compounds of the floral headspace were benzylacetone (49.1%), benzyl alcohol (6.3%), benzaldehyde (6.1%), hexyl acetate (3.5%), caryophyllene (2.1%), limonene (1.4%), and cis-3-hexenol (1.0%). Minor components were e.g. geraniol (0.7%), cis-α-bergamotene (0.7%), cis-3-hexenyl butyrate (0.7%), 2-phenylethanol (0.6%), nicotine (0.4%), methyl benzoate (0.15%), and methyl salicylate (0.05%).

„Nicotiana attenuata, a night-flowering tobacco that germinates after fires in the Southwestern United States, normally produces flowers that open at night and release benzyl acetone (BA) to attract night-active hawkmoth pollinators (Manduca quinquemaculata and M. sexta), which are both herbivores and pollinators. When plants are attacked by hawkmoth larvae, the plants produce flowers with reduced BA emissions that open in the morning and are preferentially pollinated by day-active hummingbirds.“
