Marsdenia cundurango Rchb. f. - syn.Marsdenia reichenbachii Triana - Asclepiadaceae
condurango, condorvine, Kondurango, Andenwein, Kondorliane

Evergreen vine, native to north-western South America; leaves heart-shaped; flowers small, greenish white.

The dried bark (Condurango cortex) is used as digestive (bitter tonic) to stimulate appetite and traditionally in case of liver and menstrual disorders. The bark contains a complex mixture of pregnane ester genins (condurangogenines) and their glycosides.

„In traditional systems of medicine including homeopathy, the Condurango extract (Con) is often used to cure stomach cancer mainly, without having any scientific validation of its anti-cancer ability. Con has therefore been tested against non-small-cell lung cancer cells (NSCLC) A549 and NCI-H522 (H522) known to contain the KRAS mutation, making them resistant to most chemotherapeutic agents… overall results suggest considerable anticancer potential of Con against NSCLC in vitro, validating its use against lung cancer by practitioners of traditional medicine including homeopathy.“

R., TANG, 3(1), 2013, 43-52]

„Chemotherapeutic potential of Condurango glycoside-rich components (CGS) was evaluated in NSCLC, in vitro and in BaP-intoxicated rats, in vivo… Overall results advocate considerable apoptosis-inducing potential of CGS against NSCLC, validating its use against lung cancer by CAM practitioners.“
