Dracaena fragrans (L.) Ker Gawl. syn. Dracaena deremensis Engl. - Asparagaceae - cornstalk dracaena, Duftender Drachenbaum

Evergreen shrub or small tree, 1-6m tall; leaves 20-120cm long, lanceolate to oblanceolate; flowers densely fasciculated, highly fragrant especially at night; perianth ca. 13-18 mm, cream-white with pink or purple tints; fruits mature ca. 2cm in diam., oblate to subglobose, bright orange, sweet-tasting, with 1-3 large seeds.

„In Africa, D. fragrans is commonly grown as a hedge plant… In cultivation in the Neotropics, a few generalist hummingbird species like the sapphire-spangled emerald (Amazilia lactea) visit the flowers… Several cultivars have variegated foliage. 'Massangeana', also commonly denominated „Mass Cane“, has a bright yellow central stripe on the foliage. 'Compacta' is more compact and suitable for indoor cultivation. „D.fragrans (known as wassana in Thai, or lucky plant) is popular as an ornamental plant, both indoors and outdoors, easily growing in both. The flowers bloom infrequently, so Thais believe it brings the owner good luck when it does. The fragrant flowers usually bloom at night.“
Main volatile compounds were extracted by Head Space Solid Phase Micro-extraction (HS-SPME) technique and determined by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) were α-farnesene (23.1-50.8%; peak in the morning), 3-hydroxy-4-phenyl-2-butanone (2.2-18.2%; peak at night), benzyl alcohol (3.3-15.6%; peak at noon), phenylethanol (3.0-12.9%; peak at night), eugenol (0.5-15.2%; peak at noon), methyl eugenol (3.4-10.0%), (E)-α-bergamotene (3.0-7.5%), tetradecanal (1.3-6.4%), and cinnamyl alcohol (0.5-5.2%).
Components present mostly only during night time were 2-pentyl furan (0.2-0.9%), β-ocimene (0.6-2.2%), phenylacetaldehyde (0.6-2.2%), linalool oxide (0.1-4.8%), linalool (0.1-3.3%), (E,Z)-2,6-nonadienal (0.1-1.5%), (E,Z)-3,6-nonadien-1-ol (0.1-0.8%), (E)-2-nonenal (0.4-1.6%), (E,Z)-2,6-nonadien-1-ol (1.1-1.6%), (E)-2-nonenol (0.2-0.6%), and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal (0.2-0.9%). Indole is peaking at day (0.3-7.2%) together with cinnamyl acetate (0-4.4%) and 1-dodecanol (0-0.4%).
