„Dendrobium lichenastrum is an epiphytic or lithophytic herb with creeping, branching rhizomes that are 1 mm (0.04 in) in diameter, covered with papery bracts and form a spreading mat over the substrate. The leaves are egg-shaped to almost round, 4–10 mm (0.2–0.4 in) wide and lie flat on the surface. A single white, cream-coloured or pink flower with red stripes on a thin pedicel up to 15 mm (0.6 in) long appears from a leaf base. The flower scent resembles the aroma of the well-known Cola drink. „In the case of D.lichensastrum, this olfactory impression is based on an accord consisting of limonene, linalool and geranyl acetate, deriving its character from the hesperidic notes of citral, decanal, and dodecanal and the aromatic-spicy notes of cinnamic aldehyde, methyl cinnamate and vanilline.“ Main components of the headspace were linalool (33.6%), limonene (17.0%), β-pinene (8.0%), geranyl acetate (6.6%), β-phellanderene and α-pinene (3.0%); other components nonanal (1.9%), decanal (3.0%), benzaldehyde (2.9%), benzyl acetate (2.9%), cinnamic aldehyde (1.0%), methyl cinnamate (1.0%), and vanilline (trace) e.g.
