Virola calophylla (Spruce) Warb. - syn. Myristica calophylla Spruce - Myristicaceae - parica (port.), yakee

Evergreen tree, native to South America.

Like other Virola species (Virola theiodora e.g.), preparations are used as narcotic snuff by South American Indian tribes and inhaled to produce hallucinations and visions. The main alakloid of bark, roots, flowering shoots and leaves of V.calophylla was identified as N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), minor ones were 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) and N-methyltryptamine (MMT).

V.calophylla wood chips were extracted with dichlormethane, yielding 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) as major alkaloid. Minor alkaloids were 2-methyl-6-methoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline (6-MeO-THC), and nicotine.
