Verbascum phlomoides L. - syn. Verbascum rugulosum Willd. - Scrophulariaceae
orange mullein, Windblumen-Königskerze, Filzige Wollblume

Taprooted biennial herb of Europe, 0.50-2m high; leaves lanceolate-ovate, slightly notched, lower ones broad elliptic; flowers bright yellow, 3-3.5cm across, with short pedicel; 2 stamens longer than the other ones.

Used in folk medicine like Verbascum thapsus.

The dried flowers (petals including corolla and stamens, Verbasci flos), are mainly used to treat catarrh of the respiratory tract because of its demulcent and secretolytic properties. Triterpene saponins like verbacosaponin, mucilage (3%), and iridoid glycosides (aucubin, catalpol) are regarded as active ingredients.
