Kadua haupuensis Lorence & W.L. Wagner - Rubiaceae
„This new species belongs to Kadua subg. Kadua sect. Wiegmannia. It is characterized by a subdioecious (leaky dioecious) breeding system and appears most closely related to another apparently dioecious species endemic to Kaua’i, Kadua flynnii, with which it is compared. Although the only original wild population is critically endangered and may possibly be extinct, this new species has been successfully propagated and is currently secure in cultivation.“

The flowers are nearly scentless during the day, but after twilight they emit „… a powerful aromatic-floral scent of hyacinth accompanied by the animalic aspect of jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum).“
The hyacinth accord is generated by the interplay of (% headspace) benzyl acetate (64.0%), 3-phenylpropyl acetate (0.03%), (E)-cinnamaldehyde (0.3%), (E)-cinnamyl acetate (0.7%), (E)-cinnamyl alcohol (2.1%), and (E)-nerolidol (2.5%) and a jasmine related animalic effect is created by para cresol (1.7%) and indole (4.7%).
