Elaeagnus angustifolia - Elaeagnaceae - oleaster, silver berry, russian olive, Schmalblättrige Ölweide

Thorny shrub, native to western and central Asia.
„The highly aromatic flowers, produced in clusters of 1-3, are 1 cm long with a four-lobed creamy yellow calyx; they appear in early summer…“ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elaeagnus_angustifolia

„Fragrance compounds of the flowers are used in perfume industry.“ http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schmalbl%C3%A4ttrige_%C3%96lweide

trans-ethyl cinnamate (E)-ethyl cinnamate (sweet balsam fruity)

„… the volatile oil of fresh flowers of Elaeagnus angustifolia L was extracted by means of the device of simultaneous steam distillation-solvent extraction … The yield of the oil is 0.1 % of fresh flowers (W/W). By using capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, 85 constituents were separated, of which 47 compounds constituting 96.51 % of the oil were identified. The major ingredient is trans-ethyl cinnamate, contents of which reach to 78.88 %.“
Several other cinnamates present included methyl cinnamate (1.53%), isopropyl cinnamate (1.05%), isobutyl cinnamate (0.15%), and isopentyl cinnamate (0.16%). Benzenoids were phenylethanol (1.79%), phenylethyl acetate (0.81%), benzyl alcohol (0.48%), phenylethyl benzoate (0.43%), benzaldehyde (0.3%), ethyl benzoate (0.3%), phenyl acetaldehyde (0.07%), and benzyl acetate (0.03%). e.g.; olfactory important may be also hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (1.24%), 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (o-acetyl p-cresol, 0.23%), heptanal (0.13%), nonanal (0.67%), decanal (0.09%), undecanal (0.2%).
