Perennial rhizomatous sedge, commonly growing in ponds, ditches, rivers, marshes, lakes and banks, with very wide pantropic distribution; „A decoction of rhizomes serves to treat aches. Remains found in archaeological sites indicate ancient uses since the Middle and Ancient Empires. The tuber has antiseptic properties and its paste is applied externally in cutaneous affections. It is used as a cane and to make essential oils.“

The bright yellow rhizome oils of C. articulatus (hydrodistillation, yield 0.5-1.0%) contained monoterpenes like alpha-pinene (0.7-12.9%), beta-pinene (0.4-7.4%), trans-pinocarveol (0.2-7.5%), trans-verbenol (0.2-2.7%), pinocarvone (0.1-1.9%) and myrtenal + myrtenol (0.3-7.7%). Main sesquiterpenes were ledol (3.2-8.8), caryophyllene oxide (4.6-23.3%), mustakone (7.3-14.5%), cyperene (0.6-4.3%), rotundene (0.4-0.8%), cypera-2,4-diene (0.1-0.3%), patchoulenone (0.5-1.6%), cyperotundone (2.1-6.7%) and alpha-cyperone (0.7-5.9%).
