Perennial, native to South India and Sri Lanka, introduced elsewhere and commonly cultivated as a crop plant.

Baranauskiene et al. (2006)reported that citronella essential oil is major constituted by limonene 5.2%, citronellal 33.9%, citronellol 8.7% and geraniol 16.4%.
Beneti et al. found limonene 3.4%, citronellal 40.2%, citronellol 13.3%, geraniol 17.7%, elemene 2.7%, citronellyl acetate 4.5%, d-cadinene 2.8%, geranyl acetate 4.6%, and elemol 4.7%.
