Coryanthes mastersiana F.Lehm. - Orchidaceae

Ant-garden orchid native to Colombia and Ecuador.

„…the rare Coryanthes mastersiana Lehm. from Colombia is totally dominated by the 2-(methylamino)benzaldehyde, a highly typical scent constituent for the genus Coryanthes…“
The main component 2-(methylamino) benzaldehyde (90.2%) was accompanied by 2-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde (0.05%), methyl N-methylanthranilate (0.1%), and 2-aminobenzaldehyde (anthranilate aldehyde, 0.1%).

„Like all other Stanhopeinae, flowers of Coryanthes are pollinated by male, perfume- collecting euglossine bees. The floral fragrance is produced by osmophores hidden under the mostly cup-shaped hypochile of the lip…
This species grows in the lowland forests and mangrove swamps of the Chocó region to the Cauca valley in Colombia and in northern Ecuador. We have analyzed numerous individuals of this species. The color variation is enormous, but the fragrance composition shows a significant homogeneity. In all clones investigated the fragrance is highly dominated by 2-(methylamino)benzaldehyde showing concentrations from 80-99%.“
