Thorny deciduous shrub, up to 2m high, native to China and Japan, cultivated elsewhere as ornamental; branchlets smooth, not verruculose when old; leaves ovate to elliptic, margin serrate; flowers scarlet, rarely pinkish or white; fruit a fragrant pome, yellow or yellowish green, globose or ovoid, 4-6cm in diameter.

„The volatile components isolated from Flowering Quince fruit were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. Nineteen compounds were identified of which hexanal, ethyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenal, (Z)-3-hexenyl acetate, ethyl hexanoate, linalool, trans-linalool oxide (furanoid), cis-linalool oxide (furanoid), α-terpineol, ethyl octanoate, edulan I, ethyl (Z)-4-decenoate and ethyl p-methoxybenzoate were the major constituents.“

The aroma profile of C.speciosa fruit juice was nos as rich as that of C.japonica. Main volatiles were methanol (3.9ppm), 1-penten-3-ol (3.4ppm), valeraldehyde (0.26ppm), and ethyl acetate (1.3ppm).
