Evergreen shrub or tree, up to 6m high, native to Japan and Korea, cultivated as ornamental; leaves elliptic or oblong-elliptic, leathery, glabrous, abaxially pale green and brown glandular punctate, adaxially dark green; flowers axillary or subterminal, solitary or paired, petals 6 or 7 or more, white or rose; fruit a globose capsule with 1-2 brown seeds.

Volatiles of C.japonica flowers include the monoterpenes linalool and linalool oxide and benzenoids like 2-phenylethanol, phenylmethanol, acetophenone, benzaldehyde, methyl benzoate, methyl salicylate.
