Anaphalis margaritacea (L.) Benth. and Hook - syn.Gnaphalium margaritaceum L. - Asteraceae

Erect rhizomatous perennial, up to 90cm tall, native to North America, northeastern Asia, cultivated elsewhere as ornamental; leaves lanceolate or linear, sessile, acuminate, commonly less pubescent above than beneath, or glabrous above, margins often revolute; basal and lower cauline leaves soon deciduous; flowers terminal, clustered in short, broad inflorescences; flower heads 1 cm wide or less, numerous and crowded in a short broad inflorescens, involucre 5-7mm, bracts pearly-white; achenes papillate; seeds very fine, almost dust-like.

The herb is used as an expectorant and astrin­gent, especially in homeopathy. From the leaf and stem exudate (aceton extract of brownish resin of dried plant material) of A.margaritacea a number of flavonoid aglycones was isolated: Galangin-3-methyl ether, 6-hydroxy-galangin-3,6-dimethyl ether, 8-hydroxygalangin-3,8-dimethyl ether (gnaphalin), quercetin, 6-methoxy-galangin, 3,5,7-Trihydroxy-6,8-dimethoxy flavone, 5,7-dihydroxy-3,6,8-trimethoxy flavone (araneol), 5,7-dihydroxy-6-prenyl flavanone (6-prenyl-pinocembrin), 2',4',6'-trihydroxy-3'-prenyl-chalcone, 3,5-dihydroxy-6,7,8-trimethoxy flavone, galangin, and 8-methoxy galangin.
