Shrub or small tree up to 6m tall, native to the Caribbean, rain forests from Mexico to Brazil; bark corky; leaves alternate, simple, elliptical to ovate or lanceolate; flowers funnel-shaped, about 1cm long, greenish-white, fragrant; fruit globose, pulpy, orange, 5-10mm in diameter.

The many white flowers along the twigs emit a characteristic sweet aromatic floral scent. Main component of the headspace is (E)-ocimene (46.0%). The characteristic accord is generated by 3,5-dimethoxytoluene (32.0%), jasmone (1.1%), anisaldehyde (0.2%), and methyl anthranilate (0.2%).
