Deciduous shrub, to 5m tall, native to China, cultivated as ornamental; bark gray-brownish; branchlets of current year green, branchlets of previous year red-brownish, later gray-brownish; leaves purplish green when young, elliptic or rhombic-obovate, papery, abaxially slightly pubescent on veins, adaxially sparsely pubescent; flowers appearing before leaves, fragrant, calyx reddish, corolla pink in bud and white when open.

Main components of the steam-distilled volatile oil of the flowers were phenylethyl alcohol (87.8%) and benzyl alcohol (3.3%). Minor constituents were e.g. benzaldehyde (0.09%), linalool (0.09%), phenylethyl acetate (0.22%), cinnamal (0.09%), and isoeugenol (0.23%).
