The hydrodistilled essential oil contained α-humulene (16.4%), caryophyllene oxide (12.2%), viridiflorol (8.1%), globulol (7.4%), β-selinene (7.1%), spathulenol (6.2%), (E)-nerolidol (5.1%), linalool (4.5%) and 3-pentanol (3.5%) as major components.

In a comparativ study of the fruits of five pepper species species available in the region of Mumbai (India), Piper nigrum, Piper longum, Piper retrofractum, Piper cubeba and Piper betle were evaluated for physicochemical properties including volatile oil content and piperine content. Volatile oil content was 1.6, 0.2, 0.8, 4.4, 0.2% respectively. Piperine content was 1.7, 0.3, 0.95, 0.15, 0.9%, respectively.
